About the module

This is a second year module (and a postgraduate optional) in the City and Regional Planning Course at Oxford Brookes Unviersity that weaves together two really interesting aspects of urban design: the application of actual and real solutions on the ground and the ‘art’ of urban design. By that I mean moving beyond the robust and sensible urban structuring of spatial planning, and getting into the finer aspects of what makes an extraordinary, or cherished, or beautiful urban environment. We draw these two aspects of design together through a ‘Design Code’ for a development. Design Codes are one of the key tools of the urban designer for ‘placemaking’ at the neighbourhood scale.

Every year students work in collaboration with students doing the MA in Urban Design to work on a design code for the masterplan developed at the masters stage. Students are also encouraged to work on real-life projects as was the case of BUDS 2015 working on a site in Brazil (see under 2014-2015).

You can access the work developed during each run of the module by cliking on the links below! I hope you enjoy the work produced by our students! Please leave us some feedback on the contact us page. thank you.
